One of the weirdest things in the whole of Canary Wharf is this piece of supposedly educational material by the North Dock. Let’s disregard the shoddy punctuation and the haphazard approach to facts – the UK under that name didn’t exist in 1791 and didn’t ban the slave trade in any case until 1807* ( all explained brilliantly in the Museum Of London Docklands some 50m or so away). But it’s that last line that’s so extraordinary – the Canary Wharf Estate is so insecure about how it might be perceived that it has to assure us it doesn’t support slavery. Good to know.
*There was, as it happens, a bill to abolish the slave trade in 1791, but it was soundly defeated in parliament, and a vague commitment the next year to end slavery at some never-specified point in the future, assumed by most people to be a never-to-be-reached moment.
